How We Walk?
Everyone is a leader. Every person is a leader in their own context, whatever their title or role: an artist, a scientist, a parent, a co-explorer, each with full sovereignty. Community findings never flatten these distinct voices, and no one's experience counts more than another's.
Members are the experts; we are co-explorers. The true experts on vitality are the people living it every day. Guided by Participatory Action Research, members shape what is explored and what it discovers, and we step in as co-explorers, never observing from outside, listening to each place's own words, stories, and creative expressions. Themes grow from what participants describe, feel, and do. MAGICommons' proposed framework, the seven-petal flower, is a hypothesis awaiting rigorous validation; it never shapes, sorts, or is compared with what emerges.
A neutral mirror. We reflect vitality and friction as people describe them, without assuming a community is depleted or flourishing. The mirror is neutral about what it shows; the invitation to reimagine stays open.
Every act counts. Every dialogue invites a step, and every portrait offers opportunities; a shared action log follows what unfolds, honoring every act, however small.
Traceable evidence. Every finding links back to the dialogue it came from, so anyone can follow how it grew. Stewards keep a reflection of their own influence, so it can be named honestly.
Who Takes Part
Every member is a leader in their own context and a sovereign co-explorer. Their experience is the evidence, and their reflections shape and validate the findings.
Vitality Stewards are trained, certified facilitators who guide each dialogue. Because they are part of MAGICommons, the analysis makes their influence transparent: what participants offered stays distinct, and what grew between them is recorded as co-created. Their own vitality is part of the practice too: Stewards honor their own rhythms, so the work stays regenerative for those who hold it.
The community's organizing team, the people who host the Living Lab, are partners in shaping how findings are shared and acted on, as fellow co-explorers alongside every member.
Partner practitioners (emerging): practitioners and social entrepreneurs with their own way of exploring and knowing, who partner to bring their lens into the Living Lab's core foundation, and often their own networks of communities. Their method is credited, they share in the value of the Living Labs they co-host, and the details of partnership are still taking shape.
Roles and voice. Everyone in a Living Lab holds equal worth, in distinct roles, each with authority over different things. Like a tensegrity structure, its integrity comes from these distinct forces held in responsive relation, not from making them the same.
What This Is, and Isn't
It is…
A shared map of how people across the community experience vitality
Findings that deepen as each cohort adds its voice
Measures grown from themes members identified, tested through a network-wide survey
A neutral mirror of what people describe
A space where every voice counts equally
Insight the community can use to tend its own vitality
Offerings from the ecosystem, recommended as invitations
It is not…
An evaluation of individuals or teams
A final verdict after one cohort
Measures imposed from an outside framework
Proof that a community is thriving or struggling
A ranking of members by role or status
A guarantee of specific outcomes such as funding or growth
A sales channel, or an obligation to take up any offering
What is a Living Lab?
A Living Lab is a season of participatory research held with a community, in cohorts of members who choose to take part. Each cohort opens with a community launch; each participant then has one dialogue with a Vitality Steward about what helps their vitality flow and what drains it, moving from what is to what could be, and closing with a step they feel moved to take. Their words are carefully understood and served back as portraits the community can recognize itself in, and people choose what to act on, together and on their own. Then the next cohort begins, and the picture deepens.
At its heart is one rhythm: seeing clearly what is, imagining freely what could be, and acting, however small. Many of us have had few invitations to imagine; the Living Lab offers that invitation, and treats imagination as a capacity that grows when it is welcomed, and that stirs the motivation and the courage to act. There is no small act, as long as it comes from a full and ever-expanding heart.
